What is an Online Reality Game?

An Online Reality Game (ORG) is a simulation of a reality show like Survivor or Big Brother played online with real people taking part as the players and the host. Players strategize and talk with each other, compete in challenges, and vote each other out just like they do on TV. Games can last anywhere from a single afternoon, to multiple months.

Naturally, organizing groups of 20 or more people for months on end, while creating interesting gameplay and scenarios for them is tiring work. General Purpose ORG Bot provides quality of life features to help tedious parts of running an ORG, such as channel creation and time management.

Features

  • Automatic channel management

    • /alliance creates a channel and automatically adjust permissions to allow selected members to send messages.
    • /one_on_ones creates channels for each unique pair people in a group.
  • Time management

    • /stopwatch lets individual users start and stop stopwatches in specific channels to keep track of time.
    • /snowflake finds the exact time a message was sent, or calculates the time between two messages.
  • Randomness on demand

    • /tribes divides members into equal-sized teams.
    • /choose picks from a list of options you provide.
    • /rocks eliminates a player through drawing colored rocks.
    • /slots simulates a slots machine.

History

The bot started life in summer 2020 as AllianceMaker, when 21ack learned to program for Discord and figured that other people would find their tool useful. Its only function was a precursor to the /alliance command, because creating channels is one of the most tedious parts of running an ORG. Later that year, more commands were added, the purple rose profile picture was drawn by Mirya (rosemetal), and the bot was renamed to General Purpose ORG Bot. It was officially launched and advertised on December 27th, 2020.

In spring 2022, Owen joined the project to help with hosting and the migration to slash commands. Since then, the bot has been occasionally updated to add more features, and to better help people host games. We have no plans on stopping any time soon. All (public) plans can be found on the Roadmap.
